Arrival at the station

Understandably, detainees were not happy to be in their present situation. However, in the main they acknowledged that their treatment had been reasonable, if often slow.

I was very impressed and I was surprised at the professional, efficient and polite way I was treated. But I don’t think it should have taken ten hours to complete. [I got] only one cup of tea. I asked but they changed shifts. It’s obvious that they’ve taken PACE to heart.

By no means all detainees were so polite or restrained in their comments. A number complained about the length of time it took to be allowed to telephone and to get to see their solicitors. Particular frustration was caused by police officers’ explanations that they were ‘too busy’ to attend to them.

They could be faster. I wanted to make a phone call and it took a couple of hours. I had to ask them a few times and it was always ‘too busy, too busy’. The solicitor, too.
